A dive into Water Warriors

By Sophia Oppenheim, Selena Liu, and Jenny Shine

Following its two year hiatus because of COVID-19, The WHS club Water Warriors has officially returned to WHS. Water Warriors began in 2011 when then senior, Isabel Schwartz researched the statistics of the drowning rate for brown and black children and found that it was significantly greater than those of white children. With 60 high school student volunteers and 30 students participating in the program, the club teaches elementary and middle school students from Wayland’s METCO program how to swim once a week after school at the Wayland Community Pool.
