Most weddings are usually held in extravagant and expensive locations, like banquet halls or pavilions. But John Davis and his wife, Sabrina, did not have one of those usual weddings. Davis is the PEP class teacher, defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville (LCM) football team.
Davis and Sabrina got married on Battlin’ Bear Stadium’s 50-yard line this spring. Both Davis and Sabrina graduated from LCM – Davis in 1994 and Sabrina in 2000. Because of the couple’s shared history at the school, getting married on their school’s football field was an obvious choice.
“Since my life revolves around football, it was an easy choice,” Davis said. “Plus, it just made sense because I proposed at Lamar’s spring football game while we were watching my son play. It was a perfect place for us.”
Having the wedding on the football field was always the plan for the couple. Davis was originally joking about having the wedding on the field, but to his surprise, his wife was on board with it. Like any two newlywed people, the wedding was a beautiful moment for both Davis and Sabrina.
“The most enjoyable part about the wedding was being surrounded by our closest family and friends,” Davis said. “My brother was able to get ordained and officiate the wedding. After the ceremony we had a crawfish boil at our house celebrating with family and friends.”
Planning this wedding was not particularly easy for Davis or Sabrina. Along with the normal things you need to plan for a wedding, having the wedding on the football field comes with some unique challenges.
“My wife, Sabrina, planned it,” Davis said. “I was just responsible for getting permission and showing up and unlocking the gate. The challenge was finding a date to that allowed all of our kids to attend.”
Davis and Sabrina first met in an elevator at a doctor’s appointment. They ran into each other without saying much, but they eventually started chatting online.
“I showed up very promptly 15 minutes early for my appointment, and she was heading to work running behind 15 minutes late,” Davis said. “We are the complete opposite in regard to time. She came into the elevator as the doors were closing, we chatted briefly and went our separate ways.”
Davis is a teacher and coach at LCM High School, so getting married on his own school’s football field was more than just a wedding to him. Davis has worked at LCM for nine years in total. He worked four years between 2003 and 2007 then started working at LCM again in 2021.
“It’s really awesome to see the students dress up and show school spirit for pep rallies and all of the dress up days,” Davis said. “Plus, I really enjoy working with coaching staff and kids. We have a family bond that goes beyond practice and games.”
