Before the Young Life 5K on May 2, runners from around the area gathered in front of Davie County High School in the brisk morning air. Among them, a father kneels in front of his daughter, helping zip her jacket before the race begins. (Andrea Keller)TJ Sigler, the area director of Davie County Young Life, stretches with the participants alongside the Chick-fil-A Cow before the race begins. The 5K serves as DC Young Life’s primary fundraiser to send kids who may face financial difficulties to summer camp. This year, Sigler dons overalls and takes on the role of Cletus “T-Bone” Jones, a local pig farmer turned talent scout. (Andrea Keller)Students from Davie County’s Go-Far after-school club prepare to run in the 5K after spending the school year training for the race. All six elementary schools in Davie County have chapters of this club to encourage physical activity among elementary students. (Andrea Keller)Sigler and senior Noah Hamilton sprint barefoot from the starting line in overalls as the race begins. They soon head off the course to prepare to greet runners as they cross the finish line. (Andrea Keller)Avery Van Lente, a member of the Davie High track team, pulls ahead early in the race, steadily widening the gap with every stride. He maintains this distance as he races to a first-place finish. (Andrea Keller)Johnny Royal III takes the beginning of the race stride by stride, focusing on his pace and form as runners spread out across the course. (Andrea Keller)Junior Emmie Burris crosses the finish line of the Young Life 5K. Even though she just finished the race, she keeps an active eye on the course. Earlier, she had bet her dad, Aaron Burris, that he could not run the whole race. He finishes in under thirty minutes. (Andrea Keller)Dr. Heath Belcher, Davie County Schools’ superintendent, welcomes runners after they cross the finish line with the Chick-fil-A Cow. Together, they hand out medals and prizes to the winners. The Bermuda Run Chick-fil-A supports the event by providing prizes. (Andrea Keller)After racing neck-and-neck through the course, friends Daniel Holbrook (1st Place), Camden Dyson (2nd Place), and Daniel Wilkins (3rd Place) celebrate their top-three finishes in their age division.
