After more than two decades shaping young lives through physical education, Mr. Nemecek is hanging up his whistle. The longtime Day Creek Intermediate School P.E. teacher is retiring to focus on his health and begin a new chapter with his family in Michigan.
“I have created a bond with teachers and students that will last forever,” Mr. Nemecek said.
His decision to retire earlier than planned followed a serious health scare. In 2023, he was diagnosed with cancer. Fortunately, the cancer had not spread, and surgery that November was successful. He credits early detection through a routine blood test for catching the illness in time and said he is grateful for the support he received from the Day Creek community. As he moves forward, his main priority is staying healthy.
“I’m going to spend a lot of time working out for my health,” he said. I’m going to work out about two hours a day and get my house ready, because in the summer we are moving to Michigan.”
During his time at Day Creek, Mr. Nemecek made a lasting difference in the P.E. program. His dedication and enthusiasm shaped the physical education experience for countless students and teachers.
“Students have gotten less active because of phones and video games,” he said. “Sometimes they would rather watch other people do things instead of going outside themselves.”
Students say Mr. Nemecek’s humor, energy and welcoming personality made him a standout teacher.
“He is very sarcastic, funny and nice,” said Gianna T. “He was very open, and I feel like he was very welcoming when everyone came into this school.”
Many students also remember the small routines that made his classes unique.
“Whenever we get done with stretches he says, ‘Get on the crack,’” said Sahill M.
“He repeats 67 over and over again until none of us say it again,” said Gianna T.
Saying goodbye will be challenging for Mr. Nemecek, who says he has always loved the school community.
“I loved my job so much. I love seeing the kids. I think that keeps me young,” he said.
Teachers in the P.E. department say he is leaving behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
“Mr. Nemecek is definitely a staple at Day Creek, and one of the things I am going to miss is his spirit and his charisma,” said P.E. teacher Mr. Hernandez.
Coach Henry described the bond among the P.E. teachers as something truly unique. “I would say it is kind of like super glue, where we are melded together after 20 years,” he said. “He has taught me everything I know, including how to tie my shoes.”
Colleagues also shared stories that show how much joy he brought to everyday moments.
“His way of creating a song out of nothing, instantly and right in front of you, has always been one of my favorites,” said Mr. Hernandez. “The boys’ bathroom songs were legendary.”
“He once took a simple knock-knock joke and made it way funnier,” said Henry. “‘Knock, knock. Who’s there? Moo. Moo who? Interrupting cow.’”
As Mr. Nemecek prepares for the next chapter of his life, students and staff agree that Day Creek will not be the same without him. His humor, mentorship, and love for teaching will continue to influence the school long after his final whistle.

![MORE THAN A GAME. With two diving catches in the outfield, the Lions showed up defensively, aiding in their victory over the Pacers. One catch was made by Atwood, and the other by McGraw. Throughout the game, the Lions knew that it wasn’t just about their victory today. “I think [playing for cancer] makes it bigger than just a game,” McGraw said. “Knowing that you have a bigger impact in this world than just who you are as one person.”](https://bestofsno.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/I70A1454-1-1200x800.jpg)
