Duncan Public Schools teachers and staff had an opportunity to meet with their state legislators on Feb. 20, when the Association of Duncan Educators hosts its annual Legislative Breakfast at the Duncan Middle School.
ADE teamed up with the Duncan Education Support Association to put the breakfast together. Derrick Miller, Duncan Legislative Team chair and DMS teacher, introduced the three legislators who were in attendance, including Rep. Stacy Jo Adams, Sen. Spencer Kern and Sen. Kendal Sacchieri. Rep. Brad Boles was absence because of a scheduling conflict.
ADE and DESA have hosted the breakfast every year since 2019.
“The breakfast is one way we try to open up lines of communication between teachers and legislators,” Miller said. “Not every teachers has the opportunity to go to the state Capitol.”
Duncan teachers and the legislators talked about several topics, including property taxes, a possible increase in the number of school days and the chance of a teacher pay raise.
“You can never make everyone happy,” Kern said.
Following the breakfast, the legislators also visited Miller’s first hour journalism class, where students were given a chance to ask questions about the elective officials. Questions ranged from what the job entails to favorite foods.
The visit was part of a project the students had, including researching their legislators and coming up with questions to ask.
Olivia Haddox, a seventh-grader in Miller’s first hour, said she thought the legislators were professional. She also thought that Kern was nice and funny.
During the research part of the class project, Haddox reached out to Kern for information, something Kern made sure to mention during the visit.
Eleanor Williams, another seventh-grader in the class, said she appreciated the legislators taking time to visit the school.
“If I were a legislator I would try to work on the school system and mental health,” Williams said.

![MORE THAN A GAME. With two diving catches in the outfield, the Lions showed up defensively, aiding in their victory over the Pacers. One catch was made by Atwood, and the other by McGraw. Throughout the game, the Lions knew that it wasn’t just about their victory today. “I think [playing for cancer] makes it bigger than just a game,” McGraw said. “Knowing that you have a bigger impact in this world than just who you are as one person.”](https://bestofsno.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/I70A1454-1-1200x800.jpg)
